Orofacial Pain Relief and TMJ Therapy
Are you experiencing pain or soreness around the ears or neck? Do you have difficulty eating or speaking because the joint that connects the jaw hurts? Wind River Dental Care in Lander, WY provides orofacial-related care to alleviate pain and help patients receive the best bite possible.
What is TMJ?
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction involves pain related to the joint on the sides of the face that connect the jaw to the rest of the head. We use this joint every time we speak or eat. TMJ dysfunction can cause the following:
- Pain that travels through the face (often near the ears), jaw, and neck
- Stiff jaw muscles
- Limited movement or locking of the jaw
- Painful clicking or popping in the jaw
- Change in the way the upper and lower arches fit together
Each case of TMJ dysfunction is caused by one or more factors, and sometimes these factors are not entirely known. TMJ dysfunction can be as a result of teeth misalignment, trauma suffered to the face, teeth grinding or clenching, and misalignment of the TMJ.
Receiving Your Examination
Not only does an abnormal bite cause discomfort, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain proper dental hygiene, which can lead to greater complications down the road. Moreover, clenching and grinding caused by TMJ dysfunction causes inflammation, tension headaches in the temple and frontal lobe, involuntary contractions of the facial muscles, and other harmful side effects.
A complete examination performed by one of our experienced doctors will determine the severity of patients’ condition, and then provide suggestion for comprehensive care to alleviate discomfort and improve their situation.
Treating Orofacial Pain and TMJ Dysfunction
Dr. Michael Shane and Dr. Jeffery Hammond provide comprehensive care to alleviate discomfort and address these issues at their root.
Our practice provides TMJ therapy that utilizes Botox® to weaken tension in the muscles that cause pain and discomfort, which prevent involuntary contractions and decrease headaches. Patients can experience immediate relief after only one visit.
